Music for the Feast of St. John Paul the Great

One of the best things about modern saints that have lived during our lifetime is their relatability. They have navigated the same society we're familiar with the struggles of the time, but were still able to be an example of perseverance in the faith and an inspiration of holiness for the remainder of the Church Militant. This is especially true of Pope John Paul II, now St. John Paul the Great, and his choice of music.

In 1990 it was shared in a TV interview of Pope John Paul's official photographer that the main theme from the film Western Dances with Wolves was the then pontiff's favorite musical piece. "The John Dunbar Theme," named for the film's main character, is a sweeping orchestral work reminiscent of compositions penned by mid-century American musician Aaron Copland. Dances with Wolves' score earned composer John Barry an Oscar.

How will your family celebrate St. John Paul the Great? My family would love to read about your plans!

Our family will be reading picture books, playing this score for today's free listening and some piano nocturnes (night scenes) by polish composer Frédéric Chopin with Supper. Your family can listen along below beginning with track 2:

Here are all of the Chopin Nocturnes:
