Music for Candlemas

Also called The Feast of the Presentation or The Purification of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Candlemas marks forty days after the birth of Jesus. To help your family commemorate today, I have created a Candlemas playlist for y’all to enjoy while dipping candles, taking down Christmas decorations, or just savoring your supper.

The playlist is a compilation of several settings of the Nunc Dimittis prayer, or “Song of Simeon,” from various classical music eras. Musical setting of the Nunc Dimittis are often paired with the Magnificat as part of Vespers. The text is taken from Luke 2:29-32.

“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” – Luke 2:29-32
